Philosophy of Purpose

The Barraud House program is designed to provide temporary, diagnostic placement for male adolescents who may be under-socialized, highly oppositional, or otherwise in need of the controls and services of a staff secure setting. Residents will Paramount Youth Services will provide a live-in foster parent, who will serve support person for residents and will be available to meet their needs in a timely fashion. The foster parent’s primary responsibility will be to help the residents accomplish their treatment goals and assist the parents/guardians in preparing for the return of their child. Family members and the resident are active members of a team that develops, implements, and achieves services goals. Parents/guardians and referring agencies are expected to participate in pre-placement, admissions, service planning, discharge planning, educational and vocational planning, and other appropriate meetings. The program serves males between the ages of 12 – 18 years who have manifested significant conduct difficulties as juveniles. The population served typically suffers from a variety of problems, often based on a family history that includes trauma such as sexual abuse, neglect, physical assault, and abandonment. Such history clearly impacts the resident’s ability to function effectively and independently. With appropriate and effective interventions, however, these residents can develop an increased ability to interface with both society and a variety of other individuals without profound acting-out behaviors. Residents who enter the program will work on increasing their controls over negative behaviors and develop an understanding of the relationship between thoughts and feelings that lead to problematic behaviors. Each resident’s commitment to strengthening independent and autonomous functioning is addressed. Academic and vocational training needs (to include job training) are individually tailored to the goals, need, and capabilities of each resident.
